We [Māori] must not forget that the Treaty is not just a Bill of Rights for Māori. It is a Bill of Rights for Pakeha too. It is the Treaty that gives Pakeha the right to be here. Without the Treaty there would be no lawful authority for the Pakeha presence in this part of the South Pacific … We must remember that if we are the Tangata Whenua, the original people, then the Pakeha are the Tangata Tiriti, those who belong to the land by right of that Treaty.
"We are not one people, nor should we try to be. We do not need to be. What we need to do is live and work together and play together as fellow human beings, recognising that we are a nation of a variety of races and customs."

Democracy Northland
Organised and concerted campaigns by Anti-Maori groups like Hobson Pledge, NZ Center for Political Research, Taxpayers Union, and Democracy Northland leads those without other information to question whether Maori representation is needed or democratic which is a red herring.
The poll requested by Democracy Northland and supported by a minority of our Whangarei District Council councillors was a racially discriminatory mechanism as it only applied to one ethnic group Maori.
Democracy Northland was created by the Anti-Maori ex Northland Regional Council (NRC) councillor John Bain, Robin Grieve, and Frank Newman
The polls have reduced complex issues of voice and representation to a simple binary choice, which, by encouraging people to take sides, damages race relations.
In 2017 five councils voted in favour of establishing Maori wards, in 2018 all five of those decisions were overturned by polls.
When collecting signatures Democracy Northland conveniently omitted to inform the community, that the Whangarei District Council had already decided to establish Maori Wards for the next election, and that the poll was a tool to revoke Maori Wards. Anyone with knowledge that claims that the petition was not for that purpose is being disingenuous.
